The main question I get asked about my first book, Lisa’s Testimony: A Dog’s Walk Through the 23rd Psalm is, “Was Lisa a real dog?” And the short answer is yes.
Lisa came into our lives in 2002. My twelve year old daughter, Evvan, wanted what all preteen girls wanted – a puppy. We had seen someone walking a miniature pinscher at the Farmer’s Market and thought they were the cutest thing we’d ever seen. They knew someone with a litter and the next thing you know, we’re bringing home the cutest, tiniest ball of fur. All the way home my daughter snuggled her against her neck and thought up names. By the time we got home our little puppy had the name, Lisa. Evvan had named her for Lisa Simpson from the cartoon, the Simpsons. All the rage then.
Her first night at home, she howled when we tried to put her to bed, wrapped in a blanket in her box in the kitchen. I put Lisa in bed with me. I was afraid that if she slept with Evvan, that either Evvan wouldn’t get any sleep and not be fit for school in the morning or she might roll over on Lisa in her sleep and hurt her.
That’s the beginning of our story. More to come.
