The Woman at the Well from John 4

~ One of the most important messages in the Bible is in this story. ~
Think about what Jesus could do. He could heal the sick. He could feed thousands of people with a handful of bread. He was constantly surrounded by people with the greatest needs– sick, dying and hungry. Crowds swarmed him morning, noon and night. When he multiplied the bread and fishes there were over 15,000 people there.[1] When the woman with the bleeding disorder touched him, He was described as being crushed in the crowd.[2] He was surrounded by so many people that when they tried to bring a paraplegic to Him for healing, they had to dig a hole in the roof and lower the man down on a hammock in front of Jesus.[3]
And He did important work. He gave sight to the blind. He healed illnesses and he fed the hungry. He even raised the dead!
But this woman - there was nothing physically wrong with this woman. She was healthy. She was strong. She had her eyesight. She had a roof over her head and food on the table.
~ All she had was a broken heart. ~
Think on that for a minute.
Jesus took the time to slip away from the throngs of needy, desperate people, just to be alone with her. Her broken heart mattered. Most importantly, it mattered to Him. Healing is temporary. Everyone Jesus healed eventually died. Feed someone and they are hungry again. Give them something to drink and they will thirst again. Heal the blind or the lame and old age or illness will close their eyes and weaken their limbs again.
But a heart – that treasure room of your soul and spirit - is the most valuable thing because it will never die. It goes into eternity.
Jesus was waiting there at her well. He looked right down inside her soul. He knew all about her. He talked to her. He did not judge her. He told her that she was still worthwhile. He offered her Living Water. He gave her a new heart.
A New Heart
A new heart,
He’s given me a new heart
And the things I used to do
Aren’t fun anymore.
The things I used to say
Would make me hang my head in shame
Because my new heart
Is pure.
A new heart,
He’s given me a new heart.
And the thoughts I used to think
Have been purged from within.
The plans I used to make
Would make my new heart break
Because my new heart
Knows no sin.
A new heart
He’s given me a new heart.
And it floats on a river of peace.
It soars on eagles wings.
It’s filled with so many good things
Because my new heart
Belongs to Him.
